Fusion Design System

the PROJECT

Fusion is DIRECTV's design system. It is a robust and ever-evolving repository of designs, guidelines, accessibility, style guides, and coded components.

my ROLE

I am currently the Principal Designer for the Fusion Design System, leading the build, enhancement, and governance for every Fusion component on DIRECTV.com. Building upon an atomic model, I defined base elements like color and typography, along with interactive component patterns for over 38 components.

the CHALLENGE

The Fusion Design System was borne from a necessity to cohere the legacy style inherited from AT&T with the new DIRECTV Brand direction from our then creative agency. We were without a central component pattern library, and what component guidance we did have was largely incomplete, undefined, and without guidelines. There were an abundance of accessibility errors. Likewise, developers were often left to code one-off instances of components with limited interactive direction, which led to a disparate cohesiveness across the customer experience.

the SOLUTION

My solution for these inconsistencies was to leverage the skills developed in prior roles to begin an official DIRECTV design system. Originally formed in XD, the idea of a centralized design system gained in popularity among designers, developers, and product owners alike. So I petitioned leadership for support, garnered funding, and then began recreating the UI I had origially begun in XD into its new home in Figma.

the RESULTS

Overwhelmingly, designers, developers, product owners, and leadership have recognized and appreciated having Fusion as a single source of truth when it comes to design at DIRECTV. UI is consistent and AA accessibility compliant now, guidelines are universal, production is faster, and production costs are down.
